Its geography is comprised of low-lying mountains that surround a central plain and multiple navigable rivers.

A war of independence resulted in the partition of the island forming Irish Free State which is a more sovereign state and Northern Ireland which is part of the United Kingdom to date. Ireland became part of United Kingdom in 1801.During the 16th century English rule of law was extended and reinforced in Ireland. Henry VIII, the then King of England established the title King of Ireland. Irish Culture has influenced other cultures especially in literature, Western culture, music, Irish language and Gaelic games. Ireland shares the English language with Great Britain.

In 1739 an extraordinary climatic shock regarded as “Great Frost” struck Ireland destroying stored crops severely. This led to a famine in the island in the year 1740 which resulted in the death of a quarter (250,000) of the islands population. However, the population soared during the latter part of the 17th century. In 1495, Poynings’ law gave Ireland its legislative independence from the Great Britain. Nonetheless, the British government retained its right to nominate government officials for Ireland even without the consent of Irish parliament.
